Artist's Comments

The Catbus from the anime My Neighbor Totoro. Done for a friend as a gift for his wife for Christmas. The source image is from the back of the back of the VHS case. I had never heard of Totoro until then and only watched the movie when this piece was done. A very cute story.

This piece is made from mostly Canson papers and some hand made papers. It measures 13" x 8".

The reflection of my camera in the center of the shot was unavoidable as the piece is framed and I couldn't remove the glass from the frame.

The Catbus and My Neighbor Totoro belong to Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli/Disney.

The Catbus by *paperfetish

Fan Art gets a pretty constant stream of Digital submissions, so it's exciting and refreshing to see something in such an uncommon choice of media - collage! The artist refers to his style as 'paper sculpture' and it certainly is that, with uncommon depth and richness. Check out the rest of his gallery; he covers other anime and cartoons in this style too. (Suggested by `toiabates and Featured by `animator)

"Hey you got some cat in my bus"

Beautiful piece, btw.

Very few people can make art with chunks of paper.
You have a rare and lovely talent.

"Hey you got some bus in my cat"

Sounds messy.

Thanks for the comment and compliment.

I absolutely love this piece. The scale is perfect, the colors, the flowers, the house, the trees, the night sky and of course the cutest cat bus in the world....I could go on and on.

Many of these pieces were done for the same couple, but I think this was the first color piece I did for them. He was *very* pleased with this piece as was his wife.

Thanks for the feedback and compliments!

OMG, what a coincidence! I've recently read in the newspaper that this movie is going to be shown on cinemas in my country, even though it's made in 1988.
After I read about this a couple of days ago, I've wanted to go and see it. Hasn't come (yet), though. That movie looks terrific! :D

...and the same with this piece. You're a huge talent! :)

My Neighbor Totoro is definitely worth seeing; a little slow at times (in my opinion), but a beautifully animated film. Hayao Miyazaki is amazing. I've see nearly all of his films and they are all excellent.

Thanks again for the compliment.

all your work is amazing. i would love to know how you do this or like watch you work on it. ^^; It just facinates me.
:iconpaperfetish:
Thank you very much. I wouldn't recommend watching; it is similar to watching paint dry.

As for how it is done, the very abridged explanation is each part of the image is cut from the appropriate color paper, shaped and mounted to each other and to some foam core supports.

........ok im tempted to try this myself now. Im gonna go to the craft store tomorrow and try this for myself. ^^ thanks!

Excellent! Good luck! I use knitting needles and small wooden dowels to shape the paper after it is cut. I also use methyl cellulose (acid free) glue, but Elmer's will work just fine too. I hope you will post your results.
