Artist's Comments

Also known as a happy mistake.

The eighth piece I made in glass class. The intent was to make a bolster type of vase, think a curved upright rectangle, but that clearly isn’t what I made.

I started with clear glass and then rolled it in colored glass. I then blew air to start a shape, but I blew too hard and the shape blew off to one side, making the other side too thin for the piece I wanted to make. The professor did some quick thinking and took the piece and gathered some clear glass over the thin section. He then warned me that the shape would have to change and he told me to stretch the piece out which I did. The professor then made a base for me and we attached it to the vase and separated it.

You can see my original gather as the colored, upper part of the vase. You can also see the lump on the left side where I blew too much air into the glass. The clear bottom is where the teacher gathered extra glass for me.

Although this isn’t what I intended, I do like the end result. It is very strange, but I like what happened with the colored glass. It is pretty tall, about 10” and heavy because there is so much glass.

Pretty! I like those patterns on it. It really is a fortunate mistake.

I love how this vase is a trilogy of sorts - the original gather, the unintended but awesomely quirky lump and then your teacher's gather of clear glass. I agree that it's definitely a happy mistake!

The colors are great and I love how the lump has smaller swirls of colored glass compared to the original gather.

Nice Art glass! You don't know your own strength.....too much blowing bubbles in your younger days. :)

Thanks! I like to try new things, one of these days, I'm going to get brave enough to try my hand at watercolor.

Thank you! This piece is growing on me. I still think it is a bit odd, but I do like it.
