A paper sculpture of Mara (or Marller/Marla) a demon, first class unlimited, from the manga Ah My Goddess. Done as a gift for a friend's birthday (which is tomorrow).
7.5" tall by about 5" wide. Done with Canson Mi-Teintes, Canson Effects and Canford papers, black polyester thread and innumerable x-acto blades. The black paper is the only Canson paper. It doesn't have a texture and has a very slight sheen. I'm not sure about it yet, but it holds shaping and glue very well.
I'm not sure how long this took in total, but the boots alone took nearly one full weekend. The Effects paper (the silver buckles) has three layers, the reflective front and back and a fibrous inner layer. When cut into small details, it tends to split. Fresh blades helped, but it was still slow going. Lacing the boots was time consuming as well, but it was worth it to get the laces tight.
Mara and Ah My Goddess created by Kosuke Fujishima.
Thanks! I'm really appreciate the comment on the depth, I was afraid the photo looked a little flat. Much of the illusion is created in her hips and the bustier.
I'm loving the hair. I'm a sucker for swirls and Mara's got plenty of 'em!
And nice rouging effect on the sleeves. It looks very natural. The hands are nicely done too and the whip looks like it's ready to bounce out at you.
The boots are fantastic. You were able to add nice dimension to the bottom portion without making them look clunky. And as a woman I appreciate how you took the shape of the leg into consideration when spacing the buckles so that the lacing isn't the same width all the way up the leg.
And although the boots/laces are impressive I find myself even more drawn to the subtle (and appropriately not so subtle) curves you've created with the tush, waist and chest. These three areas really bring the piece to life for me. I don't see paper - I see curves accentuated by taut fabric (or is leather? She seems like a leather kind of girl.).
Thank you for the very detailed comments! I'm really happy with the way this came out.
I like the same things you like, the curve of her hip into her thigh, the hands and some of the details in her face. The Canson paper (all the black) really holds a shape well. The left sleeve (Mara's right) has a really nice curve to it that looks a little flat on screen. I also love that I was able to cut her eyelashes and still maintain the integrity of the paper.
The material is supposed to be leather. I tried several techniques/colors of paper to try to make the red have a patent leather sheen, but it became too distracting.

Impressive, as always.
