A paper sculpture of Gaara from the manga/anime Naruto made as a part of a larger sculpture for my god son. His mother has conspired with me so I can make him a piece for his birthday in December. I’m making all of his favorite Naruto characters. He specifically identified Gaara as a child as one of his favorites. Naruto fans will note the lack of the sand marking (tattoo/scar) on his forehead, which is a good indicator of his age.

I’m really happy with this piece. I’m especially pleased by the appearance of depth from his chin to his neck to the collar of his shirt. Anime characters are always a little difficult to make in a straight on pose due to the lack of lines in the face. Generally, drawn lines can be represented as cuts and cuts help create depth in a piece by allowing the paper to be shaped. I wasn’t able to get as much shape in his face I would have liked, especially in his nose, but his face isn’t completely flat.

1 character down, 6 more to go.

Gaara is made from Canson and Canford papers and measures about 3.5”x2.75”

Naruto and Gaara are copyright Masashi Kishimoto.

This... Is pretty darn awesome. I'm sure your god son will love the finished piece. =)

It is Angry Octopus! He is angry because he only has four legs!

It sounds like the sound it makes when yer head smacks into loosely packed, moist soil. :D

Thanks! I'm pretty confident he will like it. His parents have a paper sculpture I made for them many years ago and he loves that one.

I love how you did the shading of it, you captured teh style so well =^_^=

Wow! This looks goo, so far. I really like how you did the shading. You emulated Kishimoto's style well.

I LOVE the whole chin/neck/collar portion of this piece. The depth you've managed to achieve with shading and positioning is quite impressive. (And it was even more impressive after seeing the side/back view photo!)

I'm digging the hair too. Particularly the off-placed underlayer of flesh-toned strands on the forehead. The subtle shading they provide help to make the hair less helmet-like and more natural. Well, as natural as you can get with hair like that.

Will the other characters be similar to this or will any be full figures from their head on down to their toes?

your works are always so clean and pro...they are all awesome.

Thanks, I did quite a bit of research, I watched the entire series to date.

Thanks! I watched the entire series to get a handle on his style and had plenty of reference material so I could get it right.

Thanks! I love his neck and chin and it looks so much better in person. I also have a piece of 1/8" foam core behind his face to separate the neck from the head. The collar is curved to have it extend from front to back.

The shadows of his hair are pretty common in anime, so I can't take credit for knowing to put them there, just the execution of it.

All of the characters I am doing will be busts rather than full body poses.

Thank you! I take my time cutting and spend some time cleaning up the shapes before I assemble the pieces. It takes time, but the pay off is worth it.
